Traces of Place: Recording Memory Through Paint and Metal

Day 2 of 3

About This Event

This workshop focuses on the use of basic metalsmithing techniques in combination with paint to create sculptural mementos of place. We will collect natural artifacts from the local landscape, and discuss different methods of recording memory through color, shape, and form. Students will explore a variety of techniques to apply paint and pigments directly to sheets of copper using a small jeweller’s torch. Introductory-level metalsmithing tools and techniques will be introduced to allow students to manipulate the painted metal to create three-dimensional objects that can serve as markers of moments in time and place.
