Small Works: A Handmade Future

Description

The exhibition shows a wide range of work by students, alumni, and faculty from the College of the North Atlantic’s Textile & Apparel Design Program, presented in collaboration with Craft @ The Edge (a project of the Craft Council ofNewfoundland and Labrador), College of the North Atlantic, and Union HouseArts. Students from the Textile & Apparel Design Program were challenged to create small works which push the boundaries of craft and demonstrate both strong aesthetic and technical skill. Each participant created a piece to represent their personal understanding, or reaction, to the theme “a handmade future”.

Pieces have been created in two main studio areas: Fabric Design and Surface Design. Techniques include weave, knit, felt, natural dye, embroidery, and surface embellishment.

The exhibition will end with an exciting weekend at UHA, which will include an exhibition tour and public craft workshops on July 3rd and 4th, with a closing reception on July 3rd at 7:00pm.

Special thanks to Susan Furneaux, Stephanie Stoker, Bruno Vinhas, and Jane Walker for their curatorial support and direction.
